For example, coaches can analyse a 40m sprint with detailed speed and time data broken down into customizable intervals, such as 10m, 5 m, or even 1m.
Additionally, users can also export time-based splits—detailing distance covered and speed—for intervals as short as 1 second, providing granular insights into sprint performance.
This feature revolutionizes sprint analysis with unparalleled efficiency, offering a reliable alternative to traditional speed timing gates by delivering split data with reduced time spent on setup and data acquisition.
Instead of individually timing a 40m sprint, coaches can now obtain split-by-split data for the entire squad in a single sprint effort – dramatically reducing time spent on test data capture.

Introducing Sprint Split Analysis: Transforming sprint performance monitoring with precise GPS-based distance and time splits.

In 2020, STATSports’ <a href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/apex-coach-series/">Apex Coach Series</a> was developed with amateur and grassroots teams in mind, combining the core metrics and features from our elite Pro Series system, with an easy-to-use and affordable GPS solution.

New Impacts feature added to STATSports Apex Coach Series GPS platform

The latest update to Sonra provides end users with more customisation to design and set up their software to their preference.
The aim of these updates is to give back time to users, where dashboards are easily customisable so that, post download, users can export a PDF with the push of a button providing insightful reports for coaches and other stakeholders.
Along with the enhancements made to reporting, Sonra now introduces more context within reporting and mapping features to make the translation of data more simplistic and relative.
Lastly, Sonra’s API has been improved to offer more data from Sonra to 3rd parties and/ or internal AMS’s.
<h2>Positional Groups</h2>
Sonra now introduces a new structure to player positions, where users can create primary and secondary positions.
Primary can act as the positional group, whereas the secondary can act as the position within the group (i.e., Primary: Defender, Secondary: Central Defender).
This positional structure allows to add more context to reporting and to directly compare data of players in same positional groups rather than uniformly comparing the entire squad.
Sonra allows users to now group metric charts and tables within primary positions to produce clear comparisons within charts &amp; reports.
Primary and Secondary positions have also been added as new fields for csv export and via API.

Positional Groups have a similar structure to Drill Labels (although no tertiary label) and can also be set up in settings page in Sonra.
To create the positions, users must first create the primary position and then add the secondary positions within the selected primary (positional group).
Positions are assigned to players via their profile with two new fields for primary and secondary now added.
&nbsp;
<h2>Customisable Dashboards &amp; Reports</h2>
Sonra dashboards have now become more customisable than ever before, with the ability for users to design the layout of each of the dashboard pages through positioning of widgets, enable or disable widgets, create up to 24 combo metric charts with bar, line, and area charts (scatter, bar &amp; pie charts available for single metric charts).
Combo charts can also be formatted as stacked, 100% stacked or non-stacked allowing users to translate their data in a much more digestible way for coaches and stakeholders
Metric Charts have also been updated to better display data, making it easier for users to identify any differences in the data while also improving the legibility of data labels.

As a means to translate metric data with more context, Sonra now provide users with the ability to report data as a percentage of the selected threshold profile.
This can be an easy way to present information in a more understandable format for coaches without overwhelming them with excessive values, but instead a percentage value of a set target, session norm or relative to game data.

<h2>Instant PDF Reports</h2>
Sonra allows for users to customise their 5 dashboards uniquely (Individual Session, Session, Squad Period, Individual Period &amp; Multiple Session) meaning that they have 5 pre-set reports that can pushed directly to PDF in minutes post session using the export to PDF function.
Sonra’s dashboard to PDF function allows users to print a PDF of the current selection on the dashboard immediately, including threshold colours and percentages, positions, and custom sorting, while also allowing them to disable any of the widgets that are displayed on the dashboard.
Dashboard PDFs have been revamped based on practioner’s feedback with the inclusion of the averages on every chart, increased number of columns and rows in the metric table, increased legibility, and prominent data labels.

<h2>Contextualised Sprint Maps</h2>
To better understand sprint performance, Sonra’s sprint maps now allow multiselecting of drills (up to 10) to display what period the sprint occurred in, which helps further contextualised direction, angle and length of sprints.
Each drill is assigned a unique colour and if the sprint occurs in that drill the sprint arrow will be displayed in the respective colour.

Sprint maps also provide a legend beneath the map with the selected drills and colour they each represent.
The multiselect drill function is also available on all other map types (heatmaps, time spent &amp; positional).

<h2>API Updates</h2>
Sonra’s API has been improved and become more extensive for end users.
Sonra now has the ability to send the full Raw Data via API, including 10hz GNSS data and 100Hz Accelerometer &amp; Gyroscope data.
In addition, Sonra’s API now also provides all metrics from the software including user created metrics from the Custom Metric Calculator. Drill Label components in Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Free Text fields are also now available in the API.
To improve user experience, a new date range endpoint has been added to make it easier for users to query sessions within a selected date range along with improvements made to file storage limit.

Sonra Desktop Updates

<a href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/sonra-watch-perfect-for-rtp-rehab-conditioning-sessions/">Sonra Watch</a> is one of the most powerful on field tools for a sports scientist or coach working with a group(s) for conditioning, rehab and/or Return to Play (RTP) athletes.
Sonra Watch allows a user to connect up to 8 players at once, collecting 28 metrics for each player.
Now Sonra Watch updates introduces Pacemaker, another vital feature for on field conditioning.
Depending on the aim, users can manipulate workout variables in order to achieve the desired physiological response for their athletes during that workout or session.
There are a number of variables in which can be manipulated in order to alter the physiological response [1].
The key variables include work bout intensity (through speed or pace), work duration &amp; rest durations along number of reps, sets and time between sets.
Sonra Watch’s Pacemaker feature allows users to pre-set and modify their workout variables for various types of workouts via Steady State and Intervals modes.

<h2>Steady State</h2>
Pacemaker’s Steady State mode allows a user to monitor the speed of a custom steady state workout for a single athlete.
When the athlete deviates from the set speed (above or below the custom limits) they will receive haptic &amp; visual feedback from Sonra Watch, alerting them to alter their speed and ensure they perform the exercise at the desired pace.

Steady State’s active screen provides real time insights of the workout and current rep.
The athlete’s current speed, at that exact moment, is displayed in the centre of the screen which is bordered by a coloured circle, yellow, green or red.
The colour represents whether the athlete is on pace (green), below the low limit (yellow) or above the high limit (red).
A full circle represents 100% of the target speed.
The above image shows an example of a target speed of 6.5m/s (6.3 m/s current speed as Green = 97% target speed).
Total Distance displayed on the active screen is the distance covered during all work periods of the steady state workout and will exclude any distance accumulated during rest periods or prior to the workout (i.e. warm up, etc.).
This distance value will likely be different to the Total Distance value shown in the workout summary screen, which shows all the metrics accumulated from the start of the entire session until the end of the current workout.
Time remaining beside the Total Distance will countdown the time remaining of the current rep.
The total time accumulated of the workout will be shown at the top left of the screen in blue. This includes time during rest periods also.
The current rep and current set will also be displayed at the bottom of the screen during work periods, but during rest periods the next rep will be displayed to prepare the athlete for what is next.
As the athlete is wearing the watch and working during the active periods of the workouts, only this screen and the settings screen are available for access.
The settings screen allows the user to change their set pace, stop or pause the workout or <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT210931">water lock the screen</a>.
However, during rest periods the user can access all the metric data as normal in the app.

During the rest periods the user can navigate through the app as normal and view any of the 28 available metrics, set or adjust session thresholds or change the on display carousel metric for an instant glance view of the main metric of interest during the drill or session.
When there are 5 seconds remaining of the rest period the app will automatically direct the user back to the rest screen of the workout before the next rep begins.

<h2>High &amp; Low Limits</h2>
Steady State mode is designed to ensure that the athlete completes the exercise at the desired pace, and with the independently dynamic high &amp; low limits, this allows for users to be flexible in how they define their desired pace.

The high and low limits for Steady State can be set separately from each other meaning that the low limit can be set as low as 1% of Target Speed and the high limit can be set as low 101%.
An example use case of this could be an athlete rehabbing a hamstring injury where the aim is to not exceed a certain speed during a session.
The athlete will be notified to decrease their speed when they exceed 101% of the Target Speed and will be considered on pace when they stay between 1% &#8211; 101% of Target Speed.
An alternative use case could be where the low limit is set at 100% (max low limit) and the high limit is set at 250% (max high limit) to ensure that all work completed is above the Target Speed.
This could help ensure HSR exposure or to complete time above MAS.
&nbsp;
<h2>Real Time &amp; Post Workout Feedback </h2>
The customisable high and low limits are used to determine whether the user is on pace, and when they exceed or drop below the limits they are notified instantly via haptic feedback.
If a user exceeds the high limit they will receive Apple’s ‘up’ haptic to alert them that they have surpassed their high limit.
If the user continues above this limit the will receive the haptic again every 5 seconds until they return to the desired pace.
If the user drops below the low limit, they will receive Apple’s ‘down’ haptic to signify they have fallen below the desired pace.
If they remain below, they will receive the haptic every 5 seconds they stay below until they return to the desired pace.
The haptic feedback allows the user to focus on the rep at hand while Pacemaker ensures they stay within the desired limits to achieve the aim of the workout.
After the workout, users are provided with an insightful summary of how they performed during the workout through time above, below and on pace along with the % breakdown of time spent in each (during work periods only).
Steady State’s summary also displays a time series speed graph coloured to show when the user was above, below or on pace.

Following a Steady State workout, the user can choose to either finish the session or continue the current session.
The summary also shows the load accumulated in the entire session until the end of the Steady State workout across all 28 metrics.
This can help users in their decision making for the rest of the session.

<h2>Intervals</h2>
Pacemaker’s Intervals mode allows a user to predetermine work &amp; rest times, that can be used for all types of interval training.
Coaches can input their desired workout options through custom work and rest periods and number reps and sets.
Intervals provides global times which can be applied to single or multiple players.

Intervals mode acts as a smart stopwatch that prompts the coach when to cue for work &amp; rest periods and provides a 5 second warning of when a rep is about to begin via audio feedback.
This allows the coach to focus on their athletes and task at hand, while Pacemaker manages timings.
As well as audio, haptic feedback is also provided to the user wearing the watch who is notified by a distinctive vibration &amp; chime when a work or rest period has begun.
&nbsp;
<h2>Active/ Rest Screens</h2>
The active/ rest screen provides a countdown timer based on the time input for the work or rest duration.
The green circle around the timer on the active screen also provides a visual representation of the time remaining/ completed.
This begins as an empty circle and fills up in a clockwise direction until the circle is completely green.
The rest screen runs in the opposite direction where the circle starts full orange and empties in an anticlockwise direction to signify rest period has ended.
Within these screens, the user has the ability to disable/ enable audio cues by selecting the speaker icon at the top right of the screen.
The current workout can also be paused via the pause button on the bottom right (stopping all time metrics, all metric data is still recorded) or stop the workout, via the stop button on the bottom left.
Finishing the workout set out, or prematurely, provides users with a summary of the work that was completed with total, work and rest times and number of reps and sets completed.

During Interval workouts the coach can still access all the data for up to 8 players, during both active and rest periods.

<h2>Haptic &amp; Audio Feedback</h2>
Whilst navigating through the app, users will still receive haptic and audio feedback to alert them on the status of their work and rest periods.
User will receive a single vibration and chime for the start of a work period along with an audio cue saying ‘work’.
To signify the start of a rest period, users will receive a double vibration and chime, along with an audio cue saying ‘rest’.
When there is 5 seconds left of a rest period, users will also receive a audio cue saying ‘5 seconds’ as a warning that a rep is about to begin.
At the halfway point of a rep the users will be prompted that they are halfway through the rep without the need to have to check the time on the watch.

Ensure Audio is enabled for Audio Cues and ensure haptics are set to prominent for best use on field.

SONRA WATCH – PACEMAKER

Polo’s most international and prestigious governing body, The Hurlingham Polo Association (the HPA), have agreed an innovative sponsorship deal between the England polo team and STATSports, the world’s leading player tracking and analysis provider in elite sports.
The two-year strategic partnership includes shirt sponsorship of all England polo teams for the technology brand and will be STATSports’ first venture into tracking and analysing athletes on horseback.
In a historic move for the sport of polo, the England polo team players will have access to a data monitoring programme to help improve their performance, giving them access to the performance technology used by the other elite athletes and top professionals and sports teams around the world, including football Premier League teams Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as Rugby Union, the NBA and NFL, among others.

Dependent on your app download preferences, the new version of Athlete Series should update automatically on iOS and Android.

<h2>Benchmarks</h2>
With Benchmarks, you can now compare your performance to the pros, academy players, or athletes of similar profile (Community players).

In the profile in the Settings menu, you will be given the option to choose which type of pro player you would like your sessions to be compared to – Premier League Men, Champions League Women, and so on.
Five metrics will be compared against Pro, Academy/Community data. Session duration, sport type, age, and position are all factors for Pro and Academy data.
So now, after you&#8217;re finished a session, you&#8217;ll find out if you&#8217;re physically able to go toe-to-toe with a Premier League baller, or you beat your contemporaries.
<h2>Dashboard with Calendar</h2>
With a new interactive look and feel, the main dashboard presents with a calendar displaying your eight most recently recorded sessions in bar format, with the most recent session on the far right of the graph.

Each bar is dynamic – if you click on a bar it will take you directly to that session. A blue bar represents match days, a white bar represents practice sessions.
The sessions for a selected day will appear underneath the calendar.

You’ll also now be able to view your personal best for each of the main five metrics. It also details the exact session where your personal best for each metric was achieved.

<h2>Session Analysis</h2>
There are 16 metrics analysed with the new Athlete Series app.
The top five of those – Total Distance, Max Speed, High Speed Running, HMLD, and Meters Per Minute – will be presented in card format and you will be able to swipe across to view all five.

There will also be five-minute breakdowns of your performance in each half of match day, and the entire practice session, including breakdowns of your Heat Map too.
<h2>Apex Coach Series</h2>
Coaches, we’ve got you covered. Apex Coach Series allows coaches to track players’ Apex Athlete Series data via an iPad/Android tablet.

Management dream team
One of the key reasons why Ireland have been so successful in recent seasons is down to their management team.
Joe Schmidt is arguably the best coach in world rugby. The New Zealander has led his side to three Six Nations titles in five seasons, including the historic Grand Slam against England at Twickenham on St. Patrick’s Day.
Schmidt is renowned for his incredible eye for analysis and man-management. But it’s not just the Kiwi Ireland rely upon. Former England star Andy Farrell has been a vital addition as defence coach with Simon Easterby also coming in as forwards coach.
Blend of experience and youth 
The IRFU youth development policy implemented several years ago continues to bear fruit with a raft of prodigious talents coming through in recent seasons.
Schmidt has been busy integrating the best of these players, with the likes of Jordan Larmour, Garry Ringrose, Dan Leavy, and James Ryan getting major game time.
Those young aces are already allied to world class players such Johnny Sexton, Conor Murray, Sean O’Brien, and Peter O’Mahony.
And that’s not to mention veteran stars such as Rob Kearney, Rory Best, and Devin Toner, who continue to perform at superior levels in their thirties.
Squad depth
An issue that Ireland have always had to endure is not having enough options, especially in vital positions. But that is slowly beginning to ease.

Player tracking systems, which involve building sensors into clothing that players can wear on the training ground (and in matches), are now pretty commonplace in most top leagues across Europe.

Euro 2016: Wearable tech line-up at this year’s tournament

Oklahoma is one of a growing number of programs using GPS to track and enhance practice performance, aid in recovery and get a fuller picture of what athletes or putting their bodies through as they prepare for competition.
The Sooners use a system by STATSports, an Ireland-based company that serves several other college and professional programs, including Florida State, Kentucky, Purdue, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL and the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards of the NBA.

Oklahoma Sooners using STATSports player tracking to improve performance

The Toronto Argonauts have adopted new technology (STATSports Viper) that combines GPS with an accelerometer through a pod, which helps the team track player workload through their jerseys, with the goal of preventing injuries.
A number of high-level soccer and rugby teams already have adopted similar technology, along with several NFL and NBA franchises. The Argos and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are the first CFL teams to officially give it a try, according to the league office.

“People don’t put enough emphasis on the skill of staying healthy,” said Argos general manager Jim Barker. “Just like film helps them run routes better and helps them be a better receiver . . . the GPS helps them understand their body better.”

With an investment from its new ownership group — Bell Canada and Maple Leaf Sports &amp; Entertainment chair Larry Tanenbaum — Toronto hired Matt Barr this past winter as its strength and conditioning coach. Barker said Barr is the first person to hold that title on a full-time basis with the Argos.

<h1>“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”</h1>
Injury Prevention is key in today&#8217;s elite sports world. Our sports scientist Pearse O&#8217;Doherty looks at how top coaches and athlete&#8217;s can predict and prevent injuries before they occur using STATSports Viper. He also analyses the key metrics we analyse as a player recovers from injury.
These include:

These metrics assist coaches in making important decisions when tapering subsequent training loads in the upcoming sessions. <a title="Live Streaming" href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/technology/viper-live/">Live streaming</a> is particularly advantageous as this allows coaches to adjust training loads during the session via real time feedback if a coach feels that a sufficient load has already been placed on the player.

<a title="Dynamic Stress Load" href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/technology/viper-software/" target="_blank">Dynamic stress load</a> is the total of weighted impacts at a magnitude above 2g. These include both collisions and step impacts while running. Each player’s dynamic stress load will be individualised as running style will affect this metric. This provides coaches with a quality insight of how each player physiologically responds to a training session and furthermore can allow the coach to individualise training loads to ensure the training elicits an adaptation without unnecessary load.
Step balance calculates the average peak impact of each step on both the left and right foot. It gives a strong indication of the efficiency of a players running gait. It is displayed as a percentage total of each foot. An even distribution of 50% through each foot, indicates an efficient running gait, however if this percentage deviates this could give an indication to the medical staff that the player maybe overcompensating  and further analysis may be needed to determine why there is an imbalance.

Decelerations are a valuable metric in terms of eccentric loading placed upon a player. As a player decelerates, particularly the hamstring musculature will experience a considerable eccentric loading were the muscle lengthens under tension. Hamstring injuries often occur during the eccentric phase. The STATSports Viper can be configured to calculate the number of high speed decelerations in which a large quantity could indicate that a player has experienced heavy eccentric loading and that a reduction would be advantageous to recovery.
These metrics and many more are used individually and collectively by our clients throughout the season in order to reduce risk of injury, allow adequate recovery and ensure optimal loading.
Season Analysis
A key feature included in STATSports Viper GPS System is <a title="Season Analysis" href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/technology/viper-software/" target="_blank">season analysis.</a> This allows various metrics to be compared and assessed longitudinally. Coaches can analyse how various metrics interact and how this affects the subsequent fatigue experienced by a player.

#Fingerprint Drill
STATSports Viper sports performance software offers assistance to the coaching and medical staff in rehabilitation. A new feature called “the fingerprint drill” which allows thresholds to be set for players when they are training and competing consistently as a future “gold standard” in the unfortunate instance of a player suffering an injury. The medical or coaching staff can then determine a percentage that a player must reach or be below in the fingerprint drill to be determined as match fit or showing progression in the rehabilitation process.

STATSports Viper Readiness to Train App is a new and exciting way for monitoring the loading players experience on a daily basis through the use of a subjective questionnaire within their <a title="Viper Software" href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/technology/viper-software/">Viper software</a>. Players can be tracked using the subjective markers within the Viper Readiness to Train application in an intuitive software application for iPad. The Readiness to Train application allows users to ask multiple questions of their players, all of which is completely customisable to cater for different monitoring preferences. As well as this, users can get a rate of perceived exertion for a session and bio-markers such as osmolarity and saliva tests along with the more familiar monitoring markers such as sleep, soreness, stress or whatever marker the user would like to keep track of on a daily basis.

The Readiness to Train app allows players to fill in their subjective information on a tablet which when connected to the cloud will automatically download the information into the Viper system, allowing for further in-depth analysis. These markers can then be compared and viewed against the objective markers obtained via the <a title="Viper Pod" href="https://statsupdates.wpenginepowered.com/technology/viper-pod/">Viper Pod</a> such as Dynamic Stress Load and Fatigue Index and many more metrics. The ease at which this analysis can be done allows for speedy feedback to players, coaching staff and the medical team to determine a players’ availability for training.
This feature gives both coaching and medical staff the ability to compare and relate subjective information and objective information in the daily process of monitoring player well-being and ability to maximise their training efforts over the course of a season. It brings staff closer to player well-being as well as giving them the ability to spot patterns over time that can help them manipulate player and squad training schedules to have players at their optimal physical condition when they take to the field.
