Arsenal’s academy is one of the most successful in Europe, having produced legendary players like Tony Adams and Ashley Cole as well as current stars Bukayo Saka, Max Dowman, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
Player development at the elite level is about more than talent – it’s about a full system alignment. At Arsenal, the connection between the academy and first team is underpinned by a data infrastructure that allows practitioners to monitor, adapt, and manage player progression in real-time and inform their planning.
Using STATSports, the club has built a system that removes barriers between departments, ensuring every player transition is informed, efficient and performance-driven.
Live Data Infrastructure Across Every Pitch
Arsenal’s academy-first philosophy is supported by a shared live data framework that spans the entire training ground. With STATSports Smart Beacons deployed across all pitches, the performance team can monitor academy and first-team sessions simultaneously – regardless of where each group is based. (See example below)
Tom Allen, Head of Sports Science & Performance, explains:
“We’re a club that are very big on our academy… the ability of having the infrastructure in place on one pitch, whilst the U21s are on another pitch, means we can see simultaneously what they’re doing, whether they’re on the pitch with us or the U21s.”
This flexibility extends to any combination of training units across the facility.
“If we have different units in training, you can have them on any pitch, we’ll still get the data… we’re able to get the data and make sure we’re hitting the targets that we need to hit,” adds Allen.
The result is a single, connected ecosystem that delivers consistent, reliable data in real time.
Whether academy players are with the U21s or integrated into first-team sessions or even both within the same session, Arsenal coaches can oversee multiple groups simultaneously, ensuring clear, coordinated decision-making and a unified performance framework.
Connected Data System Driving Alignment
Sonra Cloud plays a central role in linking academy and first-team environments at the club. Once sessions are complete, data is uploaded instantly and shared across departments, giving every coach immediate access to a player’s training history.
Allen highlights the impact of this infrastructure on daily workflows:
“As soon as they’re finished with us, we can send them down to the U21s and the U21’s coaches can see exactly what they’ve done with us – if they were focusing on their session rather than seeing what we’re doing.”
Ben Talbot, First Team Sports Scientist, adds that the speed of this process is crucial in such a fast-moving environment:
“It’s a very fast paced environment, we’re all very busy people. So just to be able to get the data downloaded and uploaded to the cloud as quickly as possible, so it’s available for everyone to see, is a crucial part of the day to day processes within the club.”
This connected system removes manual reporting and potential communication gaps. Whether a player starts the day with the first team or finishes with the academy, every department operates from the same data set, anytime, anywhere in the world.
Real-Time Data Informing Smarter Player Management
When academy players are integrated into senior training, their physical status often differs from the established first team group. Real time monitoring allows coaches to manage these differences effectively, adapting drills and volumes as required.
Allen explains:
“We can see the live data that comes through, make a decision on how much we need to do, should that player be in a different part of the periodisation model to what we’re training, and that way it’s seamless for any practitioner.”
This live feedback loop enables staff to make immediate, evidence-based adjustments. This helps to avoid overloading or underloading players as they move between age groups, supporting both performance outcomes and reducing their players’ injury risk.
By embedding real-time, flexible decision-making into daily practice, Arsenal maintain alignment between individual development plans and collective training demands.
The Result: A Unified, Data-Informed Pathway
By combining a shared infrastructure, seamless data flow between departments, and real-time decision-making, Arsenal have created a coherent, data-informed academy to first team pathway.
Academy players are monitored with the same accuracy as senior professionals, information moves effortlessly between departments, and coaches can make aligned decisions in real time.
This connected performance model ensures that every step from Hale End to Colney and eventually to the Emirates is as smooth as possible.
It’s no coincidence that Arsenal have always, and continue to, produce some of the most exciting academy prospects in Europe.
