Central Defender

First up is the Central Defender. You need to be a proper athlete if you want to be a top-level central defender. You’ll need to be strong, fast, and fit to make it. Look at the stats below, are you surprised by any?

To rank among the best Central Defenders, the top 5%, you should aim for a Max Speed over 32 km/h and cover more than 10 km in a game.

Full Back

The modern-day Full Back plays a vital role in attacks as well as defending the wings. It comes to no surprise that a Top 5% Fullback covers massive distances during a game.

Fullbacks run more high-speed metres than any other position, making up about 10% to 15% of their total distance at the professional level.

Midfielders

Midfielders nowadays are expected to go box to box and that’s the level you need to be at if you want to make the Top 5%. Like Fullbacks, Midfielders also travel great distances during a game, running the most compared to all other positions. Therefore, it is vitally important that you have a good baseline fitness level if you want to be in the Top 5%!

Strikers

image

Top 5% Strikers = Speedsters. The key stat to improve as a striker is Max Speed as increased speed may provide advantages in attacks.

It’s not surprising that strikers cover the least amount of distance compared to the other positions but there’s no doubt that they still need engines to track back and help the defense.

Wingers

Wingers are known for their incredible speed, just like strikers. They rely on this speed for quick counterattacks. However, the top 5% wingers and wide forwards must be good defensively in the modern game. It’s about going backwards as well as going forwards.

So, the big question is… How do you compare?

Comparing your stats to the Top 5% will provide you with valuable insights into your performance and it will highlight any areas that need improvement.

Looking at important numbers like your Max Speed, the Total Distance you run, how much of that is at high speed, and how many sprints you do can help you see what you're good at and what you need to work on. From there, you can set targets and plan your training to get better.
